The search for a description of the elementary particles and of their interactions has been a vital concern in theoretical physics for the last twenty years. In this volume Enrico Fermi makes accessible to students and experimental physicists some of the significant results of the field theories of elementary particles, and presents a qualitative discussion as an introduction to the subject. Since in many cases a conclusive formula has not been discovered, he does not attempt a mathematical treatment of the field theories but emphasizes simple, semi-quantitative procedures that may be helpful in the interpretation of experiments.
Enrico Fermi holds the Medal of Merit for work on the atomic bomb and received the Nobel Prize in 1938 for research in neutron physics.
