Imre Horváth graduated as an engineer from the Technical University of Budapest. He obtained his doctor's and candidate's degrees in recognition of his research results in water- and wastewater purification technology. Similarity considerations and dimensional analysis have always been used as the most important methods of approach in this work. During the course of his scientific and university teaching career, spanning more than twenty years, he has also been engaged in many different problems of water economics but the application of similarity considerations in modelling has always remained his main interest.
Dr Horváth has often lectured in European and other universities and at international conferences, including as an invited speaker (Munich, Paris, Amsterdam, Birmingham, Prague, Warsaw, Edmonton, etc.). In 1969 he worked at the Technische Hochschule in Vienna as an invited researcher. He is also active in several scientific societies. His publications comprise over 150 papers in Hungarian, English and German, and several books, among them the two-volume, larger work "Hydraulics of Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment" (in Hungarian).
The Hungarian version of the present volume, published in 1978 was the first book to give a comprehensive survey in this field.
