This concise and accessible introduction to the world of gene cloning assumes almost no background knowledge. Its widely admired clarity, extensive illustrations, and solid referencing have won it many enthusiastic supporters.
In this second edition, the author has clearly separated methodology and research objectives. Part II includes descriptions of techniques for gene analysis whilst Part Ill is devoted entirely to applications of gene cloning in research and the quickening interest in biotechnology. Diagnosis (via DNA probes), research into genetic diseases, and the use of animal cells in recombinant protein production are included for the first time. The author has updated the text throughout (three years is a long time in gene research) and added new material wherever appropriate. Among the new topics are several new vectors; the polymerase chain reaction; RFLP analysis; and analysis of DNA-protein interactions.
This new edition will continue co be the only genuine introductory text available on an increasingly important topic.
Dr Terry Brown is a lecturer in Biotechnology at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and is also author of Genetics: A molecular approach.
'... essential reading. It assumes very little background knowledge and is easy to read. The problems and approaches are set out in a clear and concise way without recourse to jargon ...'
