"Pendlebury's The Archaeology of Crete is a classic introductory text, presenting a detailed survey of the results of research of Cretan remains from the Neolithic to the Roman period. With the aid of fifty plates, twenty-four maps and fifty-three text illustrations, the author gives topographical surveys of over 700 ancient sites and most of the ancient routes, which he explored on foot. Architecture, pottery and other datable remains are all described in relation to the position of the sites on which they were discovered. Drawing on his lengthy experience as Curator at Knossos and Director of Excavations at Tell-el-Amarna, J. D. S. Pendlebury was able to provide a text that has not been supplanted as an essential reference tool for students of Crete."
