Wingless Victory is an epic story of Pericles, the great leader of Athenian democracy, and his passionate love for the beautiful Aspasia, history's first modern woman.
Pericles was admired by his people for his fairness and honesty, and yet his enemies sought to have him impeached. Aspasia dedicated her life to the worship of beauty, and yet she was prosecuted for impiety, punishable by death. Pericles believed that the building of the Parthenon would embody the greatness of Athens, and he was vilified for wasting public money; he wanted peace that he may finish the magnificent constructions on the Acropolis, and was involved in ceaseless wars to safeguard the empire. The novel depicts also the lives of the great philosophers Anaxagoras and Socrates; the renowned playwrights Euripides and Sophocles; the famous historians Herodotos and Thoukydides; and the talented sculptor Pheidias - all intimate friends and intellectual advisers of Pericles. Wingless Victory, the magnum opus of the author, is a coal refined by suffering, a diamond reflecting the radiance of joy, a memento of a monstrous war, a pious worship of beauty, a humble prayer for peace. It is a classic novel comparable with Tolstoy's War and Peace.
