Tibor Meray has prepared a definative and detailed deconstruction of a slice of the life of the Australian communist Wilfred Burchett. In doing so, Meray takes us back to a time and place few have been to and certainly even fewer who are alive today. Meray, a Hungarian, was one of the three communist journalists sent to 'cover' aspects of the Korean War from the North Korean side. The other two were the Englishman Alan Winnington and the Australian Wilfred Burchett.
Meray subsequently fell out with Burchett and communism in general and revenge being a dish best served, in this case, very cold, many years later wrote his account of life with Burchett. The book was spurred by a personal slight visited on him by Burchett in the 1950's; Burchett was propagandising for the Soviets, which he did for many years, and had no compunction in inventing material which cast an incorrect shadow on Meray's character.
