For more than half a century The Concise Oxford Dictionary, in its successive editions, has been recognized throughout the world as an authoritative, compact register of current English. For this fifth edition (1964) the rich field of words has been surveyed again and many modern words have been added. Developments in technical and scientific subjects are reflected by the inclusion of words like cybernetics and feedback, and new colloquial expressions of general currency, like rat race (fiercely competitive struggle) and supermarket, are copiously represented.
Words already in the body of the dictionary have been revised, and words contained in the Addenda of the impressions published since the fourth edition of 1951 have been transferred to the main text. Many others have been added from recent collections. The etymologies have been re-written throughout by Dr. G. W. S. Friedrichsen. It is hoped that, in this edition, readers in all walks of life will continue to find the dictionary a reliable guide to the meaning, origin, spelling, and pronunciation of the English vocabulary.
