This is a comprehensive introduction to social anthropology in an African context. It brings together a mass of information for the first time. It will prove as indispensable as John Mbiti's African Religions and Philosophy.
It is written from the author's practical teaching experience and so will be of particular interest to students of sociology, anthropology, languages and history. It will equally be a key book for all people interested in the peoples of Africa.
This book uses detailed case material to demonstrate social concepts and their structural and functional significance in an African context. It takes fifty-nine topics which are central to social anthropology; African examples are used although suitable comparisons are made with other societies across the world.
The first part deals with some general theories of culture and society. Kinship and marriage systems form the second part. There is then a study of political law and order, followed by consideration of economic activities. The fifth and final part is on religion, cosmology and ethics.
