THIS MONUMENTAL BOOK is the fruit of some thirty years of painstaking research by the noted dealer-connoisseur LeRoy Ireland, perhaps the leading expert on the work of George Inness. Over fifteen hundred authenticated Inness paintings are here recorded, nearly one thousand illustrated. For most of the works listed Mr. Ireland provides, from his direct knowledge and from reliable sources, full descriptions and complete histories.
George Inness, one of the founders of modern American painting, continues with the passing years to grow in stature as leading museums and collectors vie for his superb landscapes. Inness has been called a member of the Hudson River School of painters. Like them, he was inextricably involved in the severe, almost lifeless, ritual of technical meticulousness and pure fact finding in the execution of his early works. Fortunately, Inness eventually escaped from this technical captivity.
The feeling which Inness had for nature, a definite quality or gift, enabled him to create atmosphere – a mantle of air enveloping every single object in a landscape. Where his contemporaries glorified the grandiose aspects of nature, Inness searched for the intimate, the lyrical, and the poetic with all the sensitivity of his being. This, then, was Inness' great contribution to the evolution of landscape painting in America.
