Lucien Goldmann feels that recent French sociology has aided technocratic capitalism rather than analysed and criticized it. Over and above providing an introduction to the work of sociologists insufficiently known in this country, the book explores the conditions essential to a Marxist sociology and the role of philosophy as an independent discipline among the social sciences. Goldmann is a distinguished literary sociologist and critic, best known for his studies of Pascal and Racine. Though frequently cited in reading lists and academic literature, this work has not hitherto been available in English.
