This essay in social history analyses why Hungary's nineteenth and early twentieth century bourgeoisie gave birth to such internationally-known scientist. The study recounts how first the court-hanker traditions of Vienna, then the unique development of Magyar and Jewish nationalism in Greater Hungary, thirdly the dynamic of Hungary's economic modernization, and finally a great political crisis alter 1903 reinforced this collaboration; and then it shows that these same factors were decisive in the formation of Hungary’s scientific geniuses.
This book concerns important social groups which even Hungarian historians have hardly studied. It is, based in part on unpublished archival material. It will interest the specialist with its comparative discussion of the Jews alongside Eastern Europe's other nationalities. And the general reader will find in it not only an explanation of why Hungary produced a galaxy of great scientist,, but also a key to (he modern social history of (he whole vast region between the Elbe and the Urals.
