An affectionate tribute to carthorses, by one with a lifelong knowledge and love of them, begins with an historical look at all four breeds. Present-day breeders and users are listed, and chapters are included on stable care and training: should there ever be a return to horse-power these would form an accurate textbook in themselves.
Early days on a Suffolk farm stand the author, now a parson, in good stead as he recalls details of harness and equipment, and illustrates efforts made to ease the horse's workload by carefully-designed implements.
The book is illustrated with superb photographs, including some taken at the Harness Horse Parade in Regents Park, where for many years Philip Wright has acted as commentator. They are supplemented by his own pen and ink drawings, which together blend to capture the spirit of a much slower age when the carthorse was king.
