This book, the first to be devoted entirely to the subject of latin squares and their applications, sets out to give a comprehensive account from both the mathematical and the historical points of view of past an(] present research in the subject. It is couched at such a level as to make it comprehensible to most third year university undergraduates. The authors, while expecting the book to be primarily of interest to research workers, hope that substantial parts of it may also be of interest to mathematics school teachers.
The applications to the theory of Quasigroups and Loops, to Projective Geometry, to Statistical Designs and to Information Theory are explained in detail. A bibliography of the subject is supplied at the end of the book which is as nearly complete as the authors investigations and knowledge would allow. A list of unsolved problems is also provided.
