This volume was prepared by the New York Mathematical Tables Project, the predecessor of the present Computation Laboratory of the National Bureau of Standards.
The Mathematical Tables Project was organized in January 1938 under NBS scientific sponsorship, and later, in March 1943, the actual operation of the Project was taken over by the Bureau. When the NBS National Applied Mathematics Laboratories were established in July 1947, the Mathematical Tables Project became identified with the unit of the Laboratories known as the Computation Laboratory. The main offces of the Computation Laboratory are in Washington, D. C. , but work was continued in New York for some time after July 1947. The computations of the present volume were carried out in New York City.
This volume was prepared under the technical direction of Arnold N. Lowan, with the assistance of Milton Abramowitz, Gertrude Blanch, William Horenstein, William Kaufman, Frederick G. King, Jack Laderman, Jacob L. Miller, Matilda Persily, Ida Rhodes, and Herbert E. Salzer. Since the original publication in 1942, no errors have been reported in the functional values, but several misprints in the arguments have been discovered. These were corrected in the second edition in 1948, as well as in the present issue.
