The Bolyai János Mathematical Society organized the sixth Colloquium on Topology at Pécs from 7th to 11th August 1989. Five colloquia on the same subject were previously organized by the Society in the years 1956, 1964, 1972, 1978, 1983.
The members of the organizing Committee were the following:
Á. Császár (chairman), A. Szűcs (secretary),
M. Bognár, J. Deåk, J. Gerlits, I. Juhász.
There were 85 participants from 14 countries, among them 14 from Hungary. The programme contained 5 plenary lectures, 24 lectures of 30 minutes and 46 communications of 15 minutes held in three parallel sections. The subjects embrassed both general and algebraic tOpology, with applications in analysis, algebra and other branches of mathematics.
Opportunity to informal discussion was provided by a reception given by the Organizing Committee and by a half day excursion to Sik16s (one of the most intactly conservated medieval castles in Hungary) and to Nagyharsåny (open air exhibition of sculptures carved by contemporary artists).
The present volume contains, besides the list of participants, 41 papers submitted for publication to the Organizing Committee; they all are papers with unpublished new results and detailed proofs, with the exception of a few expository papers. It also includes some papers of topologists who were not able, for various reasons, to attend the Colloquium but sent their manuscripts in order to be published in the Proceedings. All papers in this volume have been refereed.
