This book is the first of the two volumes of Basic Japanese – Intensive Course in Speaking and Reading which provides material designed for approximately 15 to 16 weeks of intensive lessons (app. 400 hours) offered at the Osaka University of Foreign Studies for those foreign students who aim to gain ability to hear, speak, read and write Japanese minimally sufficient to study, or conduct research, at various Japanese universities.
The whole course consists of fifty lessons, each of which is organized as follows:
- Presentation: Oral presentation of new sentence patterns and vocabulary.
- Grammar: Bare essentials of grammatical explanat ion.
- Exercise
- Conversation: Practice in conversational expressions, taking up a specific topic for each lesson.
- Reading & Writing: Practice in reading and writing Hirakana, Katakana and Kanji, intended also for an introduction to the present-day Japan.
The Romanized transcription adopted in this textbook is what is called ‘Hepburn System’, which is still most widely used in dictionaries as well as on the streets. However, as the student' s familiarity with the Japanese writing systems increases, Romanized parts are gradually replaced by Hirakana, Katakana and Kanji.
All the materials are tape-recorded, with additional pronunciation drills at the beginning, for use at home or at the Language Laboratory.
