In 1959 the alarming news was heard that as a result of the building of the Aswan High Dam, an artificial lake would engulf twenty ancient monuments—among them the most magnificent temples of ancient Egypt.
In order to save these eternal dwellings, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) mobilized international support. In return for the generous contribution made by the United States, the Arab Republic offered a gift: the Temple of Dendur, which is to be set up at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Here is the unique story of UNESCO's action, and of the Temple of Dendur. In addition, the book recounts the daily life of the ancient Egyptians under the Pharaohs, the priests and the Greek and Roman rulers. It tells of religious rites, embalmings, black magic, and astrology s practiced in those bygone days. And with an artist's eye, the author interprets the magnificent decorations which embellish the walls of Dendur.
