József Rippl-Rónai (1861 – 1927) enriched Hungarian art with a large and varied oeuvre. His close association with his contemporaries such as Sérusier, Denis, Vuillard, Bonnard, Puvis de Chavannes, Gauguin and Maillol, had a definitive effect on his art. Rippl-Rónai composed in planes, outlined his dark-coloured surfaces with tense, refined, wavy lines, and lent a "decadent" elongation to his forms. His themes, expressing evanescent moods, are taken from the quotidian world. Judit Szabadi's introduction and the selection from the artist's own writings offer an insight into the greatness of Rippl-Rónai as both man and artist.
